Wedding Makeup Tips Every Bride Should Know- From a Makeup Artist

I wanted to bring some wedding makeup advice to the blog to help brides as much as possible in their wedding planning process. As a photographer, makeup is something of importance when it comes to how the makeup reflects in the camera. As a bride, great makeup that lasts is essential to make sure it survives throughout the whole wedding day! I also know how important it is to plan a timeline that guarantees plenty of time for pre-wedding plans- like makeup!

Madolyn Worrall of MM Creative Studios LLC was happy to offer some of her professional advice in her wedding makeup expertise. Below are some quick tips for makeup prep before the day of the wedding, on the day of, recommended time to put aside and more!

TRIAL RUN PREP

It’s always helpful for your artist to have a visual reference when talking about your makeup vision. Bring pictures of your wedding dress, hair inspiration, bridesmaids dress colors and even what your flowers will look like! These details help us get to know the vibe, style and theme you’re going for. As much as we love Pinterest, it’s not always easy to recreate makeup pictures from it. Photoshop sets a false expectation and we prefer any inspiration photos come from work we’ve created in our portfolio! Your artist should have a social media platform or website with plenty of photos to reference.

PRE-WEDDING PREP

Whether you’re a daily makeup wearer or more minimal with products, the most important thing to get you wedding day ready is your skincare routine. Start with upping your water intake and get yourself a great cleanser, moisturizer, eye cream and lip balm. Add in a gentle exfoliant a few times a week for a smooth, radiant glow.

What are some of your clients go-to products?

Under Eye Patches- Patchology (love them all!)

Gentle Exfoliant- First Aid Beauty : Facial Radiance Pads

Moisturizing Lip Balm- Fresh : Sugar LipTreatment

DAY OF WEDDING SERVICES

If you have participants in your bridal party wanting to do their own makeup due to budget, sensitivities or because they are minimal makeup wearers, no problem! We just want to ensure that they have makeup products for a special event and what they are using is photo friendly to avoid flashback. Wedding photos are an investment that will last a lifetime and we do all we can to ensure everyone looks like they’re attending the same party!

What products do you recommend or things to look for in products to avoid flashback?

To avoid flashback, I suggest eliminating products that contain sunscreen- especially if it has titanium or zinc in the ingredients. Another ingredient to avoid is Silica which is commonly found in setting powders.

DAY OF TIMELINE

When it comes to day of timeline, it’s important that all parties are on the same page such as coordinators, photographers, videographers, stylists and artists. Beauty service timelines for hair and makeup should be scheduled by those providers because they know how long their services take and communication is key to ensure everything runs smoothly and on time.

What is your average time for makeup for a bride and each bridesmaid?

The average time spent on makeup for bridesmaids and mothers is between 30-45 minutes and 1 hour - 1 1/2 hours for the Bride.

I am so grateful for Madolyn and her willingness to share her professional advice on the blog! My hope is that this information helps brides when planning their wedding day. She is available for wedding days around Columbus and surrounding areas and I highly recommend her if you are looking for a makeup artist!
